1. JoJos Makes Bakes

1. JoJos Makes Bakes

Information:

This is a large tag cube, made especially for my friends baby who is due in the middle of March, hence the “spring” association.

It took me approximately 3 hours to make, but the majority of that time was spent working out where the tags needed to be positioned before the six squares could be sewn together!

The material is a baby blue dimple fabric, which has been re-in forced with iron on stabiliser, and the ribbons are silky for tactile benefits. It has been stuffed with suitable toy filling.

If I were to make more, which I am happy to do, I would charge £15 plus p&p.

Overall height is approximately 12 inches (30 cms) and he could be done in colours of your choice.  He costs £7 plus postage

ENTRY NO. 6 ~  PEPPERMINT ART

This is a watercolour on paper titled “The First Daffodils”. It measures 7 x 5 inches and is part of my spring flowers collection. The price is £25 including postage and packing.

Contact Details: Claire Wright, Peppermint Art

 ==============================================================

ENTRY NO. 7 ~ NOTIONS OF BRECHIN

Information:

My entry is a customized, vintage handmade, woollen fabric, undertakers jacket.

I embroidered the designs onto felt & they were hand sewn in place. The symmetry was particularly difficult to achieve but I think I’ve managed it well. The theme of the jacket is Steam Punk /Scottish….with my own twist! The lovely gold colour is the tone of freesias & the red roses herald the beings of Spring. Thistles are the flowers attributed to Scotland, the clockwork motives…the passage of time…out of winter & into spring. The choice of an undertakers jacket to upcycle is symbolic of rebirth of clothing, like new shoots of flowers coming again. The use of the steampunk inspired kiltpin brooch is all related to time passing & new starts. This jacket took me weeks to compose & complete. There are many hours of embroidery & hand sewing in this garment…I love it!

This outfit was handmade by me and consists of a floral skirt and appliqued easter Chick design. The outfit was inspired by the promise of a new season, bringing together the lightness of spring as it rolls into Easter.

THE CRAFTY NETWORK CRAFT CHALLENGE ~ SPRING 2014

SPRING 2014 CHALLENGE HEADER

Welcome to our first Craft Challenge for 2014 ~ The Spring Challenge.

I know, not very original, but at this time of year all I’m thinking about is getting over these dark dismal winter months and getting into the brighter sunnier days of Spring.  Also Spring is a great time of year for inspiration, a time of re-birth and re-growth, spring flowers, leaves sprouting on trees, birds nesting, slightly sunnier and warmer weather which enables us to get out and about more.

We also have St David’s Day (1st March), Shrove Tuesday/Ash Wednesday (4/5th March), St Patrick’s Day (17th March), March Equinox (20 March),  Mothers Day (UK – 30 March), Easter (20 March) and St George’s Day (23 April) during Spring, you can also use these Spring 2014 fashion colours if you wish. Spring is jam packed with inspiration and events, so what more can you ask for to inspire you?

Spring summer 2014 Colour palette

For this challenge I am looking for crafts that have been made and inspired by this season or its events and what it means to you.  There are no hard and fast rules, apart from it must be handmade and created by you.

Please don’t forget when sending in your entry to include a photograph, a description and some contact information, how you describe and photograph your entry should be just as important as the time it took to make it.  Also the challenge is limited to one entry per person/business.  I look forward to seeing your entries!

All entries must be emailed to thecraftynetwork@gmail.com by the closing date of 7 March 2014.  Entries received after this date will not be entered for the challenge voting.

***********************************************************************************

Remember ANYBODY can enter the TCN Challenges, even if you don’t sell your items and you are just a hobbyist and of course you can also enter if you do sell your items and even if you are a professional.

The challenge is not limited to people just in the UK, everyone is welcome to join in.  Also, your entry can be anything handcrafted from a piece of artwork, a photograph, jewellery, papercrafts, something you can wear, items for the home, soaps, candles etc etc.  The TCN Challenges are all about challenging yourselves and inspiring you to think creatively.

For more details about the challenges, see HERE

Remember entries must be in by the 7th March so don’t leave it until the last minute.  All entries will be posted on the blog for the voting to commence on the 9th March.  Voting will close on the 23 March and the winner and 2 runners-up will be announced on 25th March, more details about the voting will be included on the 9th March.

Apologies, there will not be a challenge in May while I have a re-think about the challenges and decide if I will continue with them.  Since changing the craft challenges to a monthly competition the interest in them has not been the same, there has not been as many people entering or voting and to be honest I am a little disappointed by this, as I was hoping by allowing more time to enter this would encourage more people to send in entries, but it seems to have had the opposite effect. So I am thinking it might be time to call it a day.

Thanks

TCN APRIL CRAFT CHALLENGE ~ April Showers & Pastels

FRONT COVER

Yes today is April Fools Day, a notorious day for pranks and practical jokes, but this months challenge is not a joke or for no fool!  “April Showers & Pastels” is this months theme.

Your challenge this month can be inspired by one of two things or combined it’s up to you.  You can send in an entry inspired by the first part of the challenge ‘April Showers’.   Get those umbrellas out as April is a month known for its rain showers, believe it or not a bit of rain along with a rise in temperature and a hint of the sun, is actually quite welcome at this time of year to enable the trees and flowers to gain good growth.

The second part of the challenge is ‘Pastels’ ice cream colours as I call them, pinks, creams, lemons, pale blues, lilacs etc.  For this as long as your entry is based on this colour palette you can send in any handcrafted item.  For those who may struggle to think of something for the first part of the challenge, I am hoping this part will encourage and not limit you to send in an entry.  You are also welcome to combine the two for those who relish more of a challenge!

Pastel colour wheel

TCN MARCH CRAFT CHALLENGE ~ March Madness

FRONT COVER ~ TCN March Craft Challenge

I do like the month of March and the start of Spring, everything starts to come alive again after the dormant stages of Winter (including myself, lol!).  Spring flowers start to bloom, birds are nesting, the Clocks go forward, we are celebrating; St David’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Mothers Day and even Easter falls at the end of this month too, so there are lots going on.  Hence why I decided to call this challenge ‘March Madness’.

My challenge to you this month is to make something that tells me what March/Spring means to you? You can take inspiration from any of the events in March, but remember it must be handmade and you must think of a unique way to photograph your entry and sell it to me and the voters.  (Be warned I may reject an entry if the photograph is no good.  I will be doing it for your own good!) Also, Black & Grey are banned, I want colour????

March Flower: Daffodil

Birthstone: Aquamarine, Bloodstone & Jade

Memorable Dates (UK):

1. St David’s Day (1 March)
